The Unit for Research in Emergency and Disaster (UIED) of Universidad de Oviedo (Spain) was created in 1995 on the initiative of the Area of Preventive Medicine and Public Health of the Department of Medicine of the University of Oviedo to develop activities of research, teaching and technical consultancy in the fields of the Medicine and the Public Health in emergency and disaster situations. The UIED is the only research unit specializing in teaching and research of public health in disaster of Spanish universities. UIED has created and is in charge of the national database of incidents with multiple victims and disasters of Spain. Present UIED research fields are epidemiology of multiple casualty incidents, emergencies and disasters; prehospital emergency medical services and triage systems; impact of climate change, extreme climate episodes and vector-borne diseases; complex emergencies and humanitarian aid and public health intervention in disaster situation.
